Life

These are some pictures I've taken recently of my flat and the park near my house. The weather here is grim but when the sky is blue it's nice to go to the park.

Still no camera, but a purchase to mention. Last year I bought a red pair of Saltwater Sandals from Toast, the only UK company to stock them. This year they have a wider range of colours, and I purchased a tan pair, which is the colour I originally wanted. I wore my red sandals all last summer, in English rain and Morroccan dust; yet they show surprisingly few signs of wear. Buying another pair may seem excessive, but how fantastic to find a shoe I love enough (in style and quality) to own two pairs. I can't recommend Saltwaters enough; I'm famously hard on my shoes but even my clodhopping can't break them. A friend for life.

Saturday, 10 March 2012

Hello. It's been a while.
Between teaching practice, job-hunting (with long and arduous cover letters) and a burglary that left me sans camera, laptop and faith in humanity, I've not had much of an internet presence. I've mainly been reading about food; I find cooking very soothing and making a nice meal is a good way to relax after a long and frantically busy day. Fashion blogs have fallen by the wayside. I suspect this is because of a mixture of having no money, being busy and spending 5 days per week in my work staples (tapered black/grey trousers with a turn-up, v-neck cotton jumper).

But the insurance payment is processed and the days are getting lighter. Next week, a photographer friend is taking me camera-shopping for a new point-and-click. I baked orange, cranberry and oat scones. I bought a polka-dot skirt that makes me feel like spring isn't so far away.

Hopefully, I'll be back soon.

january uniform

Jumper: BDG, jeans: Gap, brogues: Deena and Ozzy
I feel like I've worn this outfit every day since January began. The jumper and brogues were in the sales and are so comfortable and understandably hard to take off! One of my new year's resolutions is to take more outfit pictures; my yard isn't pretty but it is a convenient little sun trap.

sartorial resolutions

Source unknown.

Although I have many resolutions this year, I thought I would list a few sartorial resolutions for the year ahead:
  1. Experiment with my hair. I recently tried a Bardot-esque half-up style that I found a tutorial for on Tumblr and it's been a roaring success. Lesson learnt!
  2. Leave my comfort zone. It's good to feel comfortable in your clothes and I don't like the idea of wandering round in heels and dresses all day, but I want to experiment more with the soft tailored looks that inspire me. A cotton shirt is no great leap from a breton top or a wool jumper! I want to wear more cigarette pants instead of jeans and more shirts under my jumpers.
  3. Wear a hat. Says it all.
  4. Learn to do 'barely-there' makeup. I think a bit of tinted moisturizer and some Touche Eclat would go a long way.
  5. Be more deliberate in everything.
Happy New Year! Do you have any resolutions, sartorial or otherwise?

24 hours in Geneva

Mostly taken next to Lake Geneva or at the Bains de Paquis.

It was a very brief trip but it was all that was needed to show me how beautiful Switzerland is. The water was so clear, the streets were so clean, and I actually drank beer because it was so delicious! I would love to see more of Switzerland - 24 hours was enough for me to fall in love with mountains, clear lakes and cheese fondue.

Marrakesh Museum and assorted

Yummy virgin mojitos; the beautiful painted ceiling of a Lebanese restaurant; Lebanese food; Marrakesh Museum (x3); incredible club sandwich at Le Grand Cafe de la Poste; the view from my hotel room.

That concludes my summer holiday pictures! It was an incredible week and I'm already dying to go back. I promise my next few posts will be a little more seasonally appropriate.

Djeema el-Fna

The historic and vibrant Djeema el-Fna square in the centre of Marrakesh. From a high balcony at sunset it's the most tranquil place in the world, but the minute you descend into the crouds you're overwhelmed by noise, smells, heat and people. It's the best place to be when the sun goes down: at sunset, a hundred temporary restaurants selling snail soup, olives and grilled meats pop up where you can buy an incredible meal for nearly nothing. When you've eaten, you can delve into the souks to shop by lamplight. The souks can be overwhelming and almost scary by day but by nightfall the sellers have relaxed and you're free to browse with minimal hassle. I spent many wonderful nights sucking charred meat from my fingertips whilst buying pointed slippers, leather bags and silk scarves. I can't wait for an opportunity to return.
