Summer Round-Up

So! Once again for that long list of purchases. This summer has been really good for shopping - I don't feel like I've wasted my money at any point and all my purchases are things I'll continue to wear, hopefully for years to come.

I started out with a few purchases:
  1. Saltwater Sandals in tan from TOAST
  2. Chambray shirt from Great Plains
  3. White boxy patterned t-shirt from H&M (I love it so much that I might get another I bought another - I'm too messy for just one white t-shirt)
The chambray shirt is very light and easily creased, so doesn't get as much wear as I'd like because I hate ironing. Due to weather and the hardiness of Salwaters, my tan pair look almost new. I have a red pair from last year that I've been wearing to the beach and to kayak, so they're in really good condition. My white t-shirts were no-brainers - cheap, boxy and easily washed.

My list then detailed a few items that I'd still like:
  1. A jacket of some sort - I used my birthday money to buy a navy blue leather biker jacket from French Connection. The leather is buttery soft and I feel very cool in it, which is nice. I've been holding out on buying a leather jacket for years out of a fear that I couldn't pull it off, but I think its like hats - you won't know until you've worn it for a few days. Luckily, I love it.
  2. A chunky but summery cardigan - I bought a grey marled crocheted cardigan from Zara (you can see it in this post) which has been perfect.
  3. Maybe some chinos. (I never found the perfect pair, so I'm happy to have not purchased these)
  4. White t-shirts - my two H&M t-shirts have seen me through well.
I'm proud of this section - I stuck to the list, even though I haven't actually looked at it again since I wrote it.

Finally, there was dream items - items that I probably wouldn't buy, but that were nice to think about:
  1. Leather Envelope in tan, monogrammed (I could use this as a clutch, right?)
  2. A really nice watch (mine was stolen)
  3. Chunky turquoise jewellery - on holiday I bought a chunky turquoise and silver ring which has scratched the itch perfectly.
I'm proud of having stuck to my lists so well. There was one extra purchase, which was a white oxford from GAP. I've been looking for a great white shirt for years and couldn't pass this one up. I began the summer doing quite well financially, but as school work has declined over the summer holidays I've been quite strapped for cash. This has been great, actually - I've not been buying summer clothes that I won't wear in a few weeks, and instead have been thinking about what I might get for winter.

I feel like I've gone in a good direction this summer - the purchase of a few shirts and my leather jacket, plus my brogues have made me feel quite smart and stylish, whereas I usually feel like a bit of a sandal-wearing hippy over the summer. Sandals with an oxford shirt are very different to sandals with a breton, and I've enjoyed feeling a bit smarter.

How has your summer been, sartorially? Have you made good decisions?

P.S. Apologies for the lack of pictures - my camera is playing up AGAIN. I'll add pictures as soon as I can.

  1. Well one for sticking to your list! I don't know if I can say I made good decisions this year, shopping-wise, since I bought quite a few unplanned things, but I don't feel bad about them so I guess I'll let that go.

I have also noticed that switching up my shoes makes quite a lot of difference to the same outfit.

  2. lin: Thanks, lin! I don't think you can say that something was a good purchase until a few months or years after the fact - it takes a while to see the cost per wear work out. It's just a gut feeling for me so far.
